Amid Rising Numbers of Dead and Missing, Nepal Flood Victim Toll Increases

Al-Taj News – The death toll from floods in Nepal has risen to 1,127, with 4,858 others missing, while a rescue route at the Jilong border crossing with China has been opened to intensify search operations following the floods and landslides disaster on August 26.

The Kathmandu Post reported, citing police sources in Nepal, that the death toll from the devastating floods caused by the Bhote Koshi River had risen to 1,127, after bodies were recovered from some areas and from neighboring India.

The newspaper reported, citing police, that 6,541 people had been rescued in the affected areas, while 4,858 people remain missing.

The floods swept through northern areas of Nepal on the morning of August 26, after a massive torrent of water flowed from the Chinese side into the Bhote Koshi River following an earthquake and the landslides it caused.

Meanwhile, China Central Television reported that rescue workers in China had opened a route to the border crossing in the disaster area on the border with Nepal, where the section of road leading to the Gyirong (Jilong) border crossing was completely cleared on the morning of September 2.

Rescue workers began conducting deeper searches for people missing as a result of the mudflows, while heavy rescue equipment began arriving in large numbers in the disaster area, where numerous rescue teams are working in coordination with the equipment to intensify efforts to search for the missing.
